Eco-Friendly Display Stands: The Complete UK Guide for 2026

Quick answer: An eco-friendly display stand is a product, promotional or exhibition display built from recyclable or recycled materials, most commonly engineered cardboard. Cardboard displays replace the acrylic, foamex and PVC that dominate retail and event display, cost 20 to 40% less for short runs, weigh around 87% less, and go into standard paper recycling at end of life. “Display stand” is a broader category than “exhibition stand”, and the difference matters when you are specifying. An exhibition stand is a structure you occupy. A display stand is a structure that presents something: product, samples, literature, or a brand message. The same brand often needs both, from the same supplier, in the same visual language.

The fourth category is the one where cardboard alone is often the wrong answer. A unit touring twenty shopping centres over three months takes a level of handling abuse that a single use display does not. For those, a durable frame with replaceable cardboard graphics is the better structure.

Cardboard Against the Incumbents

Retail and event display has been dominated by three materials for two decades: acrylic, foamex (PVC foam board), and correx (fluted polypropylene). All three are effectively unrecyclable through standard UK waste streams. Here is how engineered cardboard compares.

Acrylic is the one worth singling out. It is genuinely durable and looks premium, and for a permanent in-store fixture that will last five years it can be the right environmental answer despite the material. The problem is that most acrylic display units are not permanent fixtures. They are campaign units that get skipped after eight weeks, at roughly eight times the weight and four times the cost of a cardboard equivalent that would have done the same job.

Display stand pricing splits by category. Exhibition and event display stands are quoted per stand from our published booth supply rates. Retail point of sale and product launch units are quoted per project, because run length drives the price far more than size does.

Retail and point of sale units

Point of sale is quoted per project because unit cost falls steeply with run length. The three variables that set the price are run quantity, print method, and whether the unit ships flat for in-store assembly or pre-assembled. As a rule of thumb, a run of 500 counter units costs substantially less per unit than a run of 50, and litho printing overtakes digital on cost somewhere around the 250 unit mark.

How to Specify a Display Stand That Survives

The most common failure in cardboard display is under-specifying for the actual environment. Six things to get right:

  1. State the real load. Not “some product” but the weight per shelf in kilograms. Engineered cardboard handles up to roughly 50 kg per panel. Above that you need an FSC plywood insert.
  2. Declare the environment. A garden centre entrance, a chilled aisle and a dry warehouse are three completely different humidity problems. Damp environments need laminated or coated board.
  3. Say who assembles it. A unit built by your own team can be more complex than one assembled by a store colleague with no instructions and ninety seconds of patience. Retail units should go up in under two minutes.
  4. Confirm the fire requirement. Retail and non-exhibition venues often require fire retardant grade meeting BS EN 13501-1 Class B-s2,d0. Ask, do not assume.
  5. Design for flat pack shipping. If a unit ships assembled you pay for air. Flat pack cuts freight cost and emissions substantially, which is most of cardboard’s carbon advantage.
  6. Plan the disposal. Confirm the unit goes into the site’s paper recycling stream, and tell whoever removes it. A recyclable unit put in general waste is not recycled.

Three Display Stand Claims to Interrogate

  • “Recyclable” acrylic or correx. Technically true, practically false in almost every UK setting. Ask which waste stream, at which site, with which contractor. If the supplier cannot answer, the unit goes to general waste.
  • “Made from recycled material” with no percentage. Ask for the figure by weight. Engineered cardboard typically runs around 80% recycled paper fibre with the balance from FSC certified virgin pulp.
  • “Reusable” campaign units. A unit is only reusable if someone actually stores, retrieves and redeploys it. For seasonal retail campaigns that rarely happens. Be honest about whether reuse is a plan or a hope.

Under the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code, environmental claims must be substantiated. If you republish a supplier’s unsupported claim in your own marketing, the risk transfers to your brand.
